President's message
APRIL 2023 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
What is the World Coming To?
You know SMRWF doesn’t just engage in just
political activities, we also do community outreach and philanthropic work. We
have an energetic “Caring for America” committee that invites you to join in on
one of our many club activities. Please read about all that we are doing!
Now through the end of April, SMRWF is
conducting our Mamie Eisenhower Library Project Book Drive. Sylvia Greer and
Susan Honnold are the coordinators. We are collecting books at the luncheon and
all this month. For a complete list of books go to www.nfrw.org/MELP or contact
Sylvia or Susan at sylvia@artwwworks.com, susanhonnold@roadrunner.com to
donate.
We are also running a “Why is Free Speech
Important to You” Essay Contest in local high schools. This is being
coordinated by Karen Enzer and Kari Czer. Cash prizes will be awarded. Please
read about this contest posted on our website HERE. If you know a teacher who
would like to participate please contact Kari at kariczer@protonmail.com.
In April we are starting a Penmanship Tutorial
class at the Boys and Girls Club in Santa Monica to teach CURSIVE WRITING. If
you have great handwriting, more help is needed!! This course runs once a week
for 8 weeks, conducted by Kari Czer kariczer@protonmail.com. Please email
Melissa Toomin to help at melissa@melroddy.com.
In May we will once again participate in the
Overpass Flag Rally on the Saturday before Memorial Day, May 27th. This is held
at the 4th Street Bridge in Santa Monica at 10:00 AM for two hours. Come on out
and show support for our country! We are also participating in a ceremony at
the "Veterans" Los Angeles Cemetery in Westwood. Linda Lancaster has
more information at lindajlancaster@sbcglobal.net.
In July we are holding our first “Adopt a First Responder” appreciation BBQ, inviting all Santa Monica police and fire men and county lifeguards to stop by with their families or during work hours for a free lunch of burgers and hotdogs. A local church has great parking lot where we can host it and many workers are needed to help that day. Please contact Iris Jue at irjue@aol.com.
In September we are sponsoring a “Small Business
Saturday” recognizing the businesses that survived the Covid lockdown and those
who had been damaged during the riots three years ago. We will be publishing a
list encouraging friends and members to shop there on a specific day and hope
the businesses will offer a 10% discount. More members are needed on this
committee to help research businesses we want to acknowledge. Contact Pat
Peterson at patpeterson@smrwf.com.
In October we are handing out our Courageous
Conservative Award to the college campus Republican club who was the most bold
or courageous this year. A $1000 cash prize will be awarded. All college club
members will be invited to this October luncheon. Special guest speaker to be
announced. If you have contact with local Republican clubs, please reach out to
Sandra Loden at sandraloden@sbcglobal.net or Irma Hopkins, irmahop@gmail.com.
Last but not least, we are organizing ongoing
voter registration drives on weekends to encourage people to register to vote
or re-register as Republicans and to educate them on local and state issues.
This outreach begins this month and will go on through 2024. Please contact
Nancy McCord to volunteer at nancymccords@gmail.com or Melissa Toomin at
melissa@melroddy.com.
We invite you to get more involved with SMRWF. You will develop new friendships while making a difference in the lives of people around us. Contact any of the women above to find out more.
Sincerely yours,
Pat Peterson
